A Novel Approach for Permittivity Estimation of Lunar Regolith Using the Lunar Penetrating Radar Onboard Chang’E-4 Rover

چکیده

Accurate relative permittivity is essential to the further analysis of lunar regolith. The traditional hyperbola fitting method for estimation using penetrating radar generally ignored effect position and geometry antennas. This paper proposed a new approach considering antenna mounting height spacing in more detail. verified by numerical simulations regolith models. Hence calculated latest high-frequency image obtained Yutu-2 rover within first 24 days. simulation results show that underestimated when derived method, especially at shallow depth. has improved accuracy estimated depth 0–3 m, 3–6 6–10 m 35%, 14%, 9%, respectively. thickness Chang’E 4 landing site reappraised be 11.1 which ~8% compared with previous studies.

Determination of Lunar Regolith Thickness and Exploration for Frozen Lunar Water Using Human-operated Ground-penetrating Radar

Introduction: The thickness of the lunar regolith and potential for frozen water are important considerations for future lunar outposts. However, the thickness of the regolith is largely unknown and the presence of water ice has yet to be directly detected at or beneath the surface. A rapid and economical geophysical method to determine both the thickness of the lunar regolith and possibly iden...

The Lunar Regolith

Regolith is a terrestrial term, also used for the Moon. It has been defined as " a general term for the layer or mantle of fragmental and unconsolidated rock material, whether residual or transported and of highly varied character, that nearly everywhere forms the surface of the land and overlies or covers bedrock. It includes rock debris of all kinds, [including] volcanic ash. .. " (Bates and ...

Lunar Regolith Albedos Using Monte Carlos

Introduction: The analysis of planetary regoliths for their backscatter albedos produced by cosmic rays (CRs) is important for space exploration and its potential contributions to science investigations in fundamental physics and astrophysics [1-2]. Albedos affect all such experiments and the personnel that operate them. Groups have analyzed the production rates of various particles and element...

Evaluations of lunar regolith simulants

Apollo lunar regolith samples are not available in quantity for engineering studies with In-Situ Resource Utilization (ISRU). Therefore, with expectation of a return to the Moon, dozens of regolith (soil) simulants have been developed, to some extent a result of inefficient distribution of NASA-sanctioned simulants. In this paper, we review many of these simulants, with evaluations of their sho...
